Facts of Importance about the Cayman Islands The main language spoken is English. The Islands, a United Kingdom Overseas Territory, is part of the Cayman Ridge, which extends westward from Cuba. The Cayman Trench, the deepest part of the Caribbean at a depth of over four miles, separates the three small islands from Jamaica, 180 miles to the Southeast. The climate averages in winter just a temped 60 degrees. In the summer the temperature rarely exceeds 90 degrees and averages around 86 degrees. Hurricane season is June to November. The Cayman Islands have been fortunate in escaping serious damage or fatalities since 1932. The rainy season is May to October. The largest of the three islands is Grand Cayman which is 22 miles long and 8 miles wide, a total of 78 square miles. The population of the Grand Cayman Island is 37,083. The Little Cayman Island is 10 miles long, one mile wide, a total of 10 square miles. The total population of Little Cayman Island is 115.
